Tuesday's Thoughts & Goals...

So, once again I've procrastinated writing here and telling you about what's up. Sorry about that!

Lately there have been a lot of women on my facebook site that have been making one word goals for 2021. I thought about it and I decided to join along in the fun. After spending some time thinking about what I need for 2021 I decided my theme word would be Prepare! You may ask why I chose that word out of the zillions of words to choose from?

I chose prepare because in these troubleous times I need to prepare myself spiritually, physically, and mentally for all things to come. Also I need to prepare to get this Suspense novel I've been writing, for all too long, finished and published. Among other things.

Good news is - I'm working of the back of book cover blurb and looking at cover pictures - this way all will be ready when the meat of the book is! 😄 Yippee!!!

Here's a picture I took - just because...

Toodle Oooh - have a great week! - JPSmith

Monday's Musings...

Here I am, month's have gone by and still trying to keep track of this blog of mine. In my last post I told you how much I really like my new den, but somehow neglected to post any pictures of it... so I will rectify that right now. Here you go, my writing den... I still love it!!!

So, you may ask what I've been doing to take up my time. Well yes, I've been working on my Suspense Novel, Targeted for Evil, once again... or still whichever you want to say.

I've been blessed with another great-grandbaby making it seven and found out that I have another due in March 2021... Fun, fun, fun!!!

I have a lesson to prepare for my upcoming writer group, plus when the weather finally cools below the 100's I hope to get out in the yard and re-plant and of my dead flowers - killed from the extreeme heat we're had this summer. Yes, I love flowers and miss my yard filled with beautiful blooms!

So, off I go for now to work on that afore mentioned novel. Take care and toodle ooh for you. ❤❤❤❤❤

If You're Not Careful...

Recently I've come to the conclusion that if you're not careful - life will pass you by!!!
.
I have not had one free Saturday for over a month. I knew this coming Saturday I wouldn't be home once again because I will be at a writers workshop. The months ahead don't look a whole lot free-er either, Dang it all anyway!!!
.
I have let the days and months and years pass me by without thought of this blog, and my committment to writing something of interest to you in it. Grrrr.... How on earth did that happen? I guess because I wasn't careful... that's how. Pay attention to your life and don't let it pass you by like I've been doing.
.
"Don't let life pass you by, it is meant to be enjoyed. Work hard, but treat yourself once in a while to the desires of your heart, otherwise what is the point."
.
"You can't just sit around and watch life pass you by. You have to keep dreaming..." ~Cher

Three Simple Rules in Life:

  1. If you do not go after what you want, you'll never have it.
  2. If you do not ask, the answer will always be no.
  3. If you do not step forward, you will always be in the same place. ~Pinterest Pin on Life

.
At least now I have my Den/Writing Room back again and I had my hubby help me renovate the whole room starting with painting the walls... Ooooh did I tell you I really like it? Well, I really, really like it!
.
So, now all I have to do is commit to use my room and write, write, write... and hopefully some of that writing will be done on the novel I'm writing and also share a little time on here with all of you.
.
Ta ta, toodle loo, until we shall meet here again. 👀😃👀

Wacky Wednesday...

This is more than Wacky Wednesday I say,
For my whole week has gone this way!
Camping- off the mountain we were blown,
- I forgot my important stuff, I groan!

Then my computer goes on the fritz,
Not allowing me my novel to blitz!
Attacking my novel was the plan,
Now to think of something else- I can!

Hubby and dog are sleeping alike,
No energy to go one a nice hike!
Maybe later to the pool we will go,
Rid some flab from waist that seems to grow!

Wacky Wednesday...

It's wacky Wednesday for sure,
Sometimes I wonder - is there no cure?
One thing after another happens to me,
Yes, its crazy as can be.

First I got a fat lip - big,
Now how on earth can wellness I rig?
I tell you, more than this- a cold I'd rather!
So I try one thing or another.

Monday's Musing...

I've decided that today I celebrate ME.

When I was cutting my husbands hair this morning, he was adding up how many haircuts I've given him and our family throughout the years. So lets see, not including the many people I cut hair for when I worked in a salon, or the friends and extended family I cut hair for throughout the years either...

An estimate of the haircuts I've given my husband is about 8 a year (I think more than that but we'll go with his guess) for we'll say 48 years - (even though we've been married 51 this month) so we'll say that equals about 385, counting this mornings. We have four daughters that I gave haircuts to for about 17 years at say 6 a year, which would again equal about 408. We have three sons I gave haircuts to for eighteen years at about 8 a year so that would be times three making about 432. Now adding the haircuts I've given myself since I was about 20 being about 5 a year that equals about 251 - the grand total counting the one I gave hubby today and the one I gave me today is.... 1,476!!! - I guess I'm one hair cutting machine!  :O)

Have a great day everyone!

Friday's Fractured Features - Author Interview

Please join me for an Author Interview with Tina Peterson Scott for her Book Tour of, My Sweet Danish Rose.

Tina Scott is a Novelist, and Watercolor Artist, among many other talents. She has authored several children’s books, and a travel guide for Denmark. She is the author of Farewell, My Denmark and its sister book, My Sweet Danish Rose, will soon be released. Tina grew up in Mesa, Arizona where she met and married, Randy, the love of her life. They have seven grown children and nine grandchildren. Tina is currently living in Anchorage, Alaska.
.
1.      Tina, now that you live in Alaska, how do you keep from getting the dreaded ‘cabin fever’? "We go out every day and take mini excursions. Since Arizona has about 300 sunny days a year, it’s the lack of sunlight that is hardest for me to get used to in Alaska."
Ah, having lived in Anchorage myself, I know how you feel… but wait until summer, when the sun doesn’t go down until way after midnight.
.
2.      When did you first know you wanted to be an author? "I dreamed of being an author/illustrator when I was in elementary school. The dream came back to me when I was going to college as an adult."
.
3.      What inspired My Sweet Danish Rose? Did the idea come to you out of the blue or did a person or place inspire it? "It was inspired by one of my family history stories. When I was reading through it, I was prompted to write about it. The story has evolved since that first inspiration into what I believe is a wonderful story."
.
4.      It sounds so real, have you ever lived in Denmark? Or was it all deduced by research? "I’ve been to Denmark twice and while I was there, I learned a lot that helped me finish the novels. Some of the Danes I met while in Denmark told me stories of the area that I've tried to include. The rest I’ve learned through research."
.
5.  What kind of music, if any, do you listen to while you write? Or do you need absolute quiet to write? "Music distracts me. It has to be quiet."
.
6.  How do you know if an idea is good enough to write a book about it? How do you develop it? "I’m pretty sure that even seasoned writers occasionally have story ideas that they pursue only to discover that it wasn’t that great after all. To write a story from beginning to end takes a lot of time so it has to be an idea that I’m interested in/passionate about."
.
7.  What is your process of brainstorming a story? Do you just sit down and write, waiting to see what happens next, or do you outline the whole book first? You know ‘pantster’ or outliner? Which have you done with My Sweet Danish Rose?   "I like to have a clear idea of the story’s beginning and the ending before I start writing. Other than that, I am more of an organic writer."
.
8.  Do you ever experience a snag in the story, a form of writer’s block? If so, how do you deal with it? Did you experience that with My Sweet Danish Rose? "I do get snags. I’ve discovered that when I do, it’s usually because I’ve written something amiss. When I figure that out, then I start somewhere else in the novel and start writing again."
.
9.  Do you use a critique group during your writing process? Do you belong to any writing groups? Why or why not? "I’ve been a member of the American Night Writer’s Association since I first started writing. The authors there are very encouraging. And I've attended a lot of writer's conferences. The ANWA conference in Arizona is an exceptional one, in price and content." I agree, they are wonderful aren't they!?!
.
10.  When you’re writing, what is something about yourself people don’t know? You know, like wear a superman shirt, glass slippers, or fake mustache? Tina didn’t want to divulge the answer to this question, makes me wonder, hum, it must be – the fake mustache; OR one of those cute mermaid suits???
.
11.  Tina, what words of advice do you have for other writers who desire to have their writing become books in print? "Stay focused on your goal. Don’t get discouraged. Don’t give up. It’s a tall order but it’s possible. "
.
12.  What are you working on now? You have My Danish Rose being released soon, anything else in the making? "I’m currently working on a fantasy romance about a mermaid. It was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid and a vacation to Alaska."
.
13.  Do you have any other Denmark projects in the works? What are your writing plans?  "I do have plans to write another story set in Denmark.  The characters won’t be related, though it will have bits of family history included."
.
14.  One last question - where can readers go to find your books for ordering?  "Farewell, My Denmark is available in several places. My Sweet Danish Rose is currently available for pre-order and will be published tomorrow on January 31st."
.
Farewell, My Denmark: Barnes & Noble - Kobo - Smashwords - Amazon
My Sweet Danish Rose: My Sweet Danish Rose
.
Thank you so much Tina, for your time and for letting us get to know you better with this candid interview.   "My pleasure, Thanks for having me!"

Wacky Wednesdays that's for sure...

So today is wacky Wednesday that's for sure,
Off to the Base to get my meds or a cure
All of my ailments - I think come from many things,
But I think none of them for ears that rings!

I don't like the shape I'm in, no not one bit,
To this blubber I want to say, "Get!"
But I realize that I have no magic wand
I have to do something, I won't be conned!

So off walking I go each and every day,
The fresh air is great I must say
Also eat right and rid the sugar,
By drinking some good ol' water!

Wacky Wednesday's Recipe For Pumpkin Pie Filling...

I've posted this recipe last year but feel like it's worth posting again because it's Pumpkin season. Time for goblins and pumpkin pie filling. Enjoy...
.
Pumpkin pies are great. When they're made out of home-made pumpkin that makes them all the greater! Yes, pumpkins are good for something other than Jack-O-Lanterns...

.
Recipe for Homemade Pumpkin:

.

.
Clean Pumpkin of all seeds and gooey strings.
.
Cut into Large chunks (cut into 1/8's vertically then cut each in half horizontally).
Put 1 chunk into 9X9 glass Micro dish with abt 2 Cups of water.
Cook in Microwave for 20-30 minutes.
.

.
Scoop out the cooked Pumpkin (without water) leaving the rind behind for the trash. Put into a blender and whir on high until smooth. (May need to add a little of the water to start)
Pour into a large bowl and cool.
.

After the whole pumpkin is done & cooled; Measure 3 cups of cooled Pumky into 1 quart Freezer zip-lock bags (Don't add spices - just plain pumpkin) freeze. (3 cups equel about the same as a recipe that calls for the larger 1 pound can, so I freeze it in that portion making it easy to use.)
.

OR....
Cook in 350 degree oven for about an hour depending on oven and size of pumpkin... again add water in the bottom of the cookie sheet to keep them moist. I think this way is faster in the long run because you can put more in the oven at one time.
.

Follow above directions after done. Then freeze and enjoy. Thaw to make Pumpkin Pies or Pumpkin bread/muffins or whatever with favorite recipe for some homemade pumpkin treats at Thanksgiving or whenever the mood strikes.  :O)
.
I hope you enjoy this recipe.    ~Joyce

Monday's Musings...

I CANNOT BELIEVE ITS BEEN SO LONG SINCE I POSTED HERE!!! Yikes...
.
Due to popular demand I am posting these two recipes:
.
Apple Syrup:
2 Cups Apple Juice
1 Cup Sugar
2 TBSP Corn Starch
1/2 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice
1/2 stick Butter/Marg.
.
Mix Corn Starch and Pumpkin Pie Spice together with 1/4 Cup Apple Juice until dissolved. Set aside.
.
Bring Apple Juice and Sugar to a slow boil until all sugar is dissolved. Slowly add Corn Starch mixture and continue cooking and stirring. When it becomes thick-ish add butter/margarine. Stir until dissolved and take off burner and use - best while hot.
.

.
Indian Fry Bread:
(Makes 24 wedges)
2 Cups Quick Mix
1 Cup White Flour
1/2 tsp Salt
2/3 Cups Milk/water (I use 1/3 Cup each)
.
Deep Cast Iron Skillet for cooking (or what ever is your favorite)
Cooking Oil abt 2 inches deep (I use Light Olive Oil)
.
While oil is heating to HOT (abt 375) - mix well the dry ingredients together well. Then add the liquid and mix well then knead a few times to get all the flour mixed in. split in half and roll out one half at a time on floured surface. Roll as you would a pie crust. Slice circle into 12 wedges. Do the same with second half.  By this time your oil should be hot... be careful not to burn yourself or to get the oil TOO hot. If you see its smoking then turn it off for a few minutes while you finish making your wedges.
.
Cook 3/4 wedges at a time until golden brown... drain on paper towels until all are cooked or if you serve while you're cooking - dig in. Serve with apple syrup and whipped cream/cool whip; powdered sugar; peanut butter; or even ice cream!

 ************

Quick Mix:
(13 cups mix)

8 1/2 Cups All-purpose Flour
1 TBSP Baking Powder
1 TBSP Salt
2 tsp Cream of Tarter
1 tsp Baking Soda
1 1/2 Cups Instant Nonfat Dry Milk
2 1/4 Cups Vegetable Shortening
.
In a large bowl, sift together all dry ingredients. Blend well. With pastry blender, cut in shortening until evenly distributed. Mixture will resemble cornmeal in texture. Put in a large airtight container. Label. Store in a cool, dry place. Use within 10-12 weeks.  (OR Freeze for future use.)
.
ENJOY!

Friday's Fractured Features... Writing - Hobby or Job?

I've often thought other people have a different sun and moon or something that makes them have more hours in their days than I do... for they seem to get way more done in their writing efforts than I do. This has reminded me of one time when I was at a SCBWI writing conference in Utah where we had classes with a certain teacher throughout the conference... my teacher happened to be LDS Author Dean Hughes. Each day we went to class and he coached and taught us the fine art of our craft. One of the things he said that stuck with me (but I haven't as yet been able to make myself apply) is: he said that each day he got up and showered and dressed for work, had breakfast with family, then went in his den, closed the door and went to work. If you're working from home you have to treat it like a job or you will never get your work completed.
.
Those profound words were re-iterated in a magazine article I recently read. It said, "You can't add more hours to the day, but you can supercharge those you already have. As often as possible, put writing first; before the kids wake up; before you go to work, before you run that errand, turn on the TV, check your e-mail and Facebook posts, or take a break. Putting writing before other intentions ensures you will get it done ...Writing time is work time, and it's as important as any other kind of work. Don't kid yourself that you can write while watching TV, or that you'll get to it after the next phone call. Set yourself up for success by writing in environments that are friendly to your focus. ...explain to family that writing time is 'do not disturb time' unless it's an emergency. Hang a sign on your door. Sit at your computer every day at the appointed time, whether or not you feel like writing... at least 20 minutes a day until it's a habit and you can spend more productive time."
.
So in essence if you want to be a published author... you have to treat your writing time not as a hobby but as a profession. You need to put the time and effort into it as you would if you were going to work for a high class company. Hours spent in writing time, in research, in rewarding self for job well done, time for "going home" and leaving work at work, play time, etc.
.
Now that I've been reminded of Dean Hughes and the lessons learned I hope to be able to be more productive at following this counsel!

Tuesday's Off Day - New Things...

So I've been trying to be more diligent in my writing and blogging... Today's a day of new beginnings toward that quest. A New Look and hopefully more conscientious about my blogging abilities, capabilities, and write-abilities!
.
I will keep my Monday Musings; Wacky Wednesdays; and Fractured Fridays but I will not try to write on each of those days each week... I'm going to try for one of them a week and if that doesn't work I'll hop to every other week.
.
One thing though... don't plan on a lot of writing from me for the next couple of weeks because starting this week-end I will be having our family come in for our Smith Family Reunion... consequently I'll be involved with family gatherings etc.
.
Therefore you may ask why I'm starting with New Things today instead of waiting - well simply because I have time today and I may not have it in the next couple of weeks and I want to get it going... so after the 6th of July, when they all go home, then I'll be more apt to be busy with this again.  :)
.
Hence once again stay tuned... and be patient with me.
Thanks, Joyce

Friday's Fractured Features-

For the past little while I have been saturated with life's adventures... And I have chewed off all my fingernails! Grrr
.
Our 50th wedding anniversary came and went with a fantastic man I'm proud to be married to. We spent a wonderful day. We went to the Temple where we were married 50 years ago and felt at peace and saw some old friends there too. We went and did a little shopping then dinner & a movie.
.
Next came our son's wedding & me in charge of making the wedding cake... now that was a project. We got to the building and someone was supposed to be there but we found it locked. I had the cake in the hot car! Grrr. The icing was then too soft and when my husband decided to carry said cake into the building un-aided he messed up the whole side of the cake! I was a bit miffed. But luckily I had brought frosting and tubes and tips to put a semi fix on it.
.
Wedding over I had all of the huge white table cloths I had borrowed from a friend to try and get all the stains out of from peeps that were careless in their eating - & they had spills of red punch on them too. I ended up washing them in four loads and did those four loads five times counting the pre-wash cycle, adding up to 20 loads of wash, taking the whole day long to get them spotless white again. Whew!
.
Then all table cloths clean and folded I needed to move the box away from my bed (which I had used as my folding table) so I could sleep that night and not bump into said box... bad idea! In moving it I hurt my back!!! I've been two & a half weeks getting my back to settle down so I could move around again.  Grrr
.
Now I've been back to working on my novel and feeling decidedly unqualified to be a writer/author so I stopped writing long enough to make a mock up cover to help get me pumped up about my writing again. Now I'm wondering if my title is the best title ever. So stay tuned to Monday and we'll see the solution I come up with.  :O)
.
Thanks for stopping by,
~Joyce

Friday's Fractured Features... A Recipe

Pasta Sausage Meal

12 ounces of Orecchiette or I used 16 oz. Large Shells Pasta
2 Bunches Broccolini, or Broccoli Florets
2 Small size Zucchini, cut in chunks
9 yellow Cherri Tomatoes, cut in fourths
8 oz. of sweet Italian turkey Sausage, Or I used 16 oz. Jimmy Dean Country Mild Sausage - roll
sausage into small balls I used a teaspoon to cut amount.
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
Pinch of red pepper flakes
1 large egg
Freshly ground pepper
½ cup grated ricotta. Or sprinkle with parmesan cheese and Mozzarella
Small sprigs of Fresh herbs cut with scissors into small pieces. (Rosemary, Sage, Lemon Thyme, Spicy Globe Basil, and Mexican Tarragon).
                                           {Underlined ingredients are the choices I used.}

1.      Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook as the label directs, adding the broccoli during the last 2 minutes of cooking. Reserve 1 cup cooking water, then drain the pasta and broccoli. (I did this differently - continue to read below.)

Add olive oil to this to keep noodles from sticking
Use teaspoon to form balls

 2.      Meanwhile, roll the sausage meat into small bite size meatballs. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the meatballs and cook, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through, 5 to 6 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

roll balls perfectly with hands
My stove cooks hot so adjust accordingly

Be careful because Snoopy is waiting for one to drop.
 3.      Pour off any drippings from the skillet, then add the remaining 3 tablespoons olive oil, the garlic, red pepper flakes ½ teaspoon salt and the fresh herbs. Cook over medium heat, stirring 1 minute.  (I ran out of room in my pan of noodles so put the herbs, olive oil, garlic, red peppers and salt in my electric skillet and cooked 1 minute then added the zucchini & cooked for about 2 minutes, then added the broccoli. Continue cooking until vegetables are done. I then added the meatballs and pasta in my electric skillet and continued with the egg water.)

4. Whisk the egg with the reserved cooking water in a small bowl, then add to the skillet and stir until the sauce thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper.

5.  Sprinkle with the cheeses; continue to heat until cheese is
                 melted and serve.

~ Hope you enjoy this... my family did.  :O)

Wacky Wednesday...

It’s Wacky Wednesday don’t you see,
Time to tell you ‘bout wacky ol’ me –

Spring
By Joyce P. Smith

Everywhere there are bees to see,

There are bees in the tree.

There are bees on the tower,

There are bees on every flower.

Bees are in the feeder,
Are there bees on my reader?

Hey there’s a hole way up there high,
"Plug all those holes" I sigh.

I tell you it’s not a drill,
There are bees all over the sill.

There are bees all on the floor,

There are some bees by the door.

Oh no, there are bees in the wall!

Lots of bees-  think I’ll bawl

Is there a comb of honey?
I surely wish it were money!
Is honey in my wall?
It shouldn’t be there at all…
Nope, it shouldn’t be there at all!
